it does seem like a bit of a scam, but it's really just a ploy to get attention for their game... and look, it worked!

i'd pay the $1 if it was a guarantee i'd get the game, but i can't afford to pay full price so they lost me as a customer by doing their promotion this way. oh well, i'll probably pirate it now that i've heard of it and can contribute by spreading the word.

it's like a bet.
they're betting that they won't get $10 million, and by pre-ordering, you would be betting that they will get $10 million.
i think the developers chose the better option, and i am siding with them... so they can't have my $1.

i thought about that briefly but then i looked at where it says nothing happens if they don't sell 10 million preorders.
to give you a sense of scale, 11 million copies of Starcraft (one of only 10 PC games to have sold over 6M copies) have been purchased since it's release in 1998.
