Topic: What's your stance on piracy?

Triptych !LightPenis started this discussion 15 years ago #12,798

Mostly asking because I started talking to someone in a small band from a small town near here, and they didn't mind me not paying for their music at all. So I wanna see where everyone else stands on it.

I find it bad that musicians expect to get paid over and over again for one thing, sell a single, than sell an album, than remaster it and sell again...
It's not like an architecht gets paid every time someone enters the building he designed...

Musicians should earn money like everyone else, working (gigs, concerts etc.)

Software wise it's more complicated... but hey, I do what I want cause a pirate is free :D

It's not more complicated. If it's more complicated it's because your philosophy is retarded (which it is btw, seems to be based entirely upon jealousy).

The current business model is unsustainable. We probably would have moved on to a new business paradigm if it wasn't for statist coercion.

It is more complicated.

Let's take adobe premiere pro and avrils skater boy for example. I bought both legit and own them now.
I film some stuff at the skatepark and edit a nice movie in the software I bought with the song I bought and now I'll sell it on DVD...

Adobe won't mind cause that's how the world works, but avrils label will hang me on my balls making me pay some more for something I already bought.

Thats a retarded argument, you're assuming that misic will continue to be produced indefinately, but if artists arent paid because of piracy then artists won't make music anymore. Sure, once a song is on the web it's infinately available, but the crafting of music is not sustainable on zero salary.

Well, we didnt have audio recording and they were paid to perform. We are still paying them to perform for us today, but instead of going to see them we buy their albums. Musicians still do perform live, and plenty of artists can make money that way. But, in this era of high technology new ways to make money are around, too., and there is nothing wrong with adopting new technology to make money.

What, do you want to go back to the days of wandering minstrels and only live performances of music? I prefer to listen to music in my car.

Invalid in what sense? His bundle theory is still a fairly common (though I think unpopular) description of objecthood, the problem of induction that he raised remains problematic for the philosophy of science (particularly if you don't accept Popper's solutions to it), he wrote a seminal work on the history of England, and he wrote some really serious critiques of religion and religious doctrine. Granted, many of his ideas are discredited and the problems he raised have for the most part been decently resolved, but he's not a moron.

It's the same with Descartes and Plato. No serious philosopher today really agrees with Descartes' body-soul dualism, and no serious philosopher agrees completely with Plato's theory of how society ought to be structured, but that doesn't mean they were stupid. They were men who were smarter than you or I will probably ever be, and the fact that they were wrong about things has more to do with historical circumstance than a lack of intelligence.

And to keep this on topic, uh...

Piracy is bad I guess.

Immoral, but a fact of life that anybody in the world of digital commerce needs to accept.

Yes, it is morally preferable to pay for such digital goods, but at the end of the day, it is still just ones and zeroes being traded; you're paying for the license and the labor that went into making it, not the product itself.

this is pretty much true of everything you can buy... definitely everything you can buy at a store.
the product is an arrangement of molecules, you are paying for either the labor involved in getting the product on the shelf or a license for the particular arrangement of molecules.

I see where you're coming from, but I feel that while the intellectual property of physical goods is also important, you should be able to do whatever the fuck you want with it on a personal level, and sadly, that is often not the case when companies try just a little too hard to prevent piracy; for instance, the free software world almost pissed its pants with fear when people thought Microsoft's new requirement of UEFI would prevent the installation of operating systems that aren't Windows 8.

yeah, things like that and closing the analog hole on TVs and media players are BS... it's sad that companies are gimping their products in attempts to prevent you from exercising your legal rights. Luckily there is always a way to circumvent that crap, the HDCP master key, for example, leaked almost immediately, letting people decode the encrypted HDMI streams from their bluray players and other devices.

@231,190 (E)
i'm not retarded, im just stretching the concept to the extreme so that it's more fun to discuss.

let me use your language, so maybe we can actually talk instead of nitpicking over semantics...
okay, so when you buy something you are paying for a product, but what is the product? it's a combination of things.
you aren't just paying for the physical item (which could be considered data), but the licenses for the technologies involved in the product, the labor involved in obtaining the matter from the earth, the shipping of the material from where it was obtained, the arrangement of the material into something useful, the packaging and marketing of the product, and all sorts of other shit.

you are paying for the 'value' added to the raw material.
that value is really just data. the material was free, dug from the earth.

If someone puts the time and hard work, they deserve compensation. If they want to release it for free, that is their choice. You don't make that choice.

The cost of music is beyond reasonable. For $10-$20 you can get unlimited enjoyment. For less than $2 you can get any single song you'd like many for under $1.

Many artists songs are freely available on YouTube (availability may vary by location). You can also listen to music for free on the radio or through Internet streaming sites like pandora.

The industry is trying to adapt. You want to pretend that you deserve to benefit off of the work of others. I say you don't. You just don't want to be bothered to use any of the many methods available to enjoy the content in a manner that is decided by the content provider.

lol @ your entitlement attitude. If people like it, they will want to support the artist so that they continue to make more music.

> The cost of music is beyond reasonable. For $10-$20 you can get unlimited enjoyment. For less than $2 you can get any single song you'd like many for under $1.
It is actually incredibly unreasonably priced. The supply of any song or album is infinite, therefore it is worthless.

Why doesn't Meowth pay for lots of music? Alright, well check this bitches... So yes, I have lots of CDs that have been paid for. As big of a pirate as I am, I've paid for lots of old school CDs that actually deserve it. You know, where the artist makes their own beats and doesn't just steal it from another song. Where the lyrics actually have more than one verse, and it makes sense, not just the chorus repeating itself ten times. So yes, I do pay for some music, but I don't pay for a lot of it. Mainly newer stuff I won't pay for. It's unoriginal. Nothing is creative about the song. There is little to no talent. It's ridiculous.

Why doesn't Meowth pay for software? Alright, now check this shit out... You know my favorite version of WinRAR? It's WinRAR 3.51, the only full free version or WinRAR they gave out a long time ago. There's lots of sites that give software away for free, but you [have] to install it that same day or some other bullshit. What's up with that? I mean, even if you happen to install it that day, if you uninstall it, you lose it. So that's some bullshit. At least from my experience, that's how shit's been. Plus, why did my netbook come with Windows XP, yet older ones came with Windows 7? The fuck is up with that? I want Windows 7 bitch. So, I put it on myself. Who would pay hundreds of dollars for Photoshop just for one license? I understand if you're a business, but if you're just using it for personal use... What the fuck? Plus, honestly, how good are you with it? Are you really [that] good that it's worth paying all that money for some cheap lighting effects or some shit? Didn't think so, bud.

It is made up. There is no obligation to support an artist if you enjoy their pirated music. People often act for immediate gratification at the expense of long-term well-being. Right this second people are enjoying pirated music, movies, and games without providing any support for those products.

By pirating the products to begin with, it demonstrates the person is not going to support the artist. That's a given. Later, buying another album or going to a concert does not cancel anything out. You are paying for the concert ticket to go to the concert. You paying for that current album.

Your logic supports your delusion view of the world, but it doesn't stand up to even the slightest criticism.

This is precisely my point! The only obligation is moral. Like listening to a busker.

> People often act for immediate gratification at the expense of long-term well-being.
Except that one can give money to an artist whenever one feels like it, so there is no short/long term problem.

> Right this second people are enjoying pirated music, movies, and games without providing any support for those products.
People enjoying themselves! OMG this must stop! Many people can not provide support to artists, yet I am glad that today these poor people can benefit from the artists' work.

> By pirating the products to begin with, it demonstrates the person is not going to support the artist. That's a given.
lol not a given at all. I always pirate before I buy to test the album out. I pirated this one album and I didn't like it, listened to it again a couple months later and loved it, so I bought it.

> Later, buying another album or going to a concert does not cancel anything out. You are paying for the concert ticket to go to the concert. You paying for that current album.
Except that even under current coercive legislation one is allowed to make multiple copies of digital media, so that's not even true.
