Topic: Why is moving on from someone so difficult?

There is this guy at my old place of employment. We used to talk a lot as friends, and I didn't realize it at the time, but I think I liked him. I was currently in the process of getting over someone else at the time. Another co-worker kind of shipped us, and I guess, jokes on them, they were right. I did like him. This hurt until I eventually told him through text. I wanted to tell him in-person, but the pain became too unbearable that I sent him the text. Plus courage from telling the last person gave me the confidence to do this.
Needless to say, he put me down gently. He told me that he only saw me as a friend. I respected that and I was afraid of making him feel awkward, since he also reassured me not to worry since he too also feels awkward. This made me want to keep my distance since I didn't want to add any more awkwardness toward him.
Skip forward a bit. Co-workers kept bringing up his name. One of them eventually stopped after I requested it to their credit. Another kept egging me on with his name and little jokes, that it soon started getting cryptic. Like maybe there was some sort of hidden communication or she was trying to say, oh yeah, he does. Circumstances changes, people change, which is what they told me. This frustrated me and I kept had it in my mind he only saw me as a friend or a co-worker. She exclaimed "oh yeah, he does!" like maybe this guy sensed I was stressed after I sent him another text explaining the situation. Like maybe he confronted her or something.
His behavior at work sort of aligned with all of this happening simultaneously too. Gestures, sideways smiles, and patterns. I'm still not sure if this means anything, but at the same time, all logic points toward something. Since then, I've ended up on a self-discovering odyssey which may have even brought me to Islam. This guy I know comes from a Mormon background. That's all I'm going to say. In fact, now I'm on an expedition to compare and contrast the difference between Mormonism and Islam. Two faiths that seemingly want to be that third part in a religious trilogy.
Anyway, I think this guy's family might be keeping an eye on me, or even this guy himself through my electronic devices and maybe even physical locations.
Like he doesn't want me to forget about him or something.
And what's strange is that because of a certain shitty meme here, I lost my job, which is also due to me being so discombobulated and desperate for answers I broke a few protocols at my workplace. I got fired for that and possibly for my mental condition. I'm still considering on sueing them because fuck them, wrongful termination, motherfuckers.
Anyway, despite the difference, if someone led me on this odyessy, I cannot help but feel like I love him more now. is this weird?

the ordinary child human condition is to feel stress when not secure with parental attachment, and the adult human condition is to feel distress when not coupled
so it is with instincts of survival of the individual and of the species

I only read the headline tbh but I've had many relationships and I found the only thing that helps you get over someone is time. There is no trick, you just have to suffer and wait.

How do you get fired over a meme posted here? Also yeah like Erik said the only thing that helps is time and distracting yourself with other things (work, hobbies, family, travel, etc.) until you're over them and ready to date someone else.
