I believe people can do two things:
1. Literally give money, food, and training to the poor.
2. Work in fields that help people, like Doctors without Borders. But to do that, you have to spend a million on med school, and have enough money to take 6 months off to work for free.

Yeah, people with money have the most economic ability to provide Good Progress™, but I’m not sure that we as a society have clearly defined that role. The conflicts between money-and-power versus the disadvantaged-and-exploited will continue, and they’ve trended quite badly, it seems. I know unions have their own ills, but I hope that greater organization amongst and representation for the disadvantaged can be had. Our corporate-controlled culture leaves many behind.

Actually, after reading it, I have to agree with DM. For anyone making over $60K/year, it makes sense to stop looking towards gaining wealth for happiness and to actually start looking towards what really makes you happy in life, but for anyone who has to constantly struggle to make ends meet, and doesn't have enough disposable income without enjoying simple hobbies, or for anyone who has to work 60 hours a week, life doesn't quite work that way. It's very easy for the affluent in this country to look at this economy and say "Meh, I guess I'll just take the money I've made so far and do something else with my life." But for the unemployed, it's not that easy.

Being poor is not a perpetual, birth given disease. It is a situation of those that do not work enough, take the right decisions or take advantage of the opportunities they are given, like you for example.
There is no reason for the ones that achieve success and fortune to give away their hard earned money just because the others can't properly take care of themselves.

Yes, we seem to be moving into an era where production is more information-oriented rather than material. There seem to be more people shuffling information and providing services rather than producing goods. Other countries --China stands out here-- are passing into a massive production and industry boom and enjoying the kind of economy we just left behind. Is this bad? Is there some way we can adjust and still maintain our economic position on the world stage? Should economic interest lead us to try to go back?
I have no good answer about how to handle the shifts. I feel like I need to keep this idea in the back of my mind and play with it before I really have an opinion. Anyway, thanks for giving me something to chew on for a bit.

Except, the middle class is shrinking. The number of people, as a percentage of the population, living in poverty is growing.
A major factor in the dramatic rise of youth unemployment is competition with older workers, who are themselves facing a jobs crisis. More people 55 and older are now working than before the recession. As a result of the decline in wages, spouse’s unemployment and declining home valuations, older workers are not retiring. If they are laid off, they often seek entry-level positions that previously went to the young.
At the same time, incomes are plummeting for those just starting out. In 1969, only 10 percent of men in their early 30s were classified as low earners (less than the federal poverty rate). By 2004, it was 23 percent, and it has continued to grow.
A January 2010 report by the Kaiser Foundation highlighted one of the consequences of the systematic impoverishment of the youth. Young adults are the least likely to have access to health insurance of any group in the US, with an estimated 29.3 percent of the 19-29 age group lacking coverage.
Young adults who are working are less likely to have employer-sponsored health insurance and often cannot afford the cost of individual plans. According to the Kaiser study, of the young workers who have no coverage, more than half live in households with incomes below 150 percent of the federal poverty level.
Anonymous I replied with this 15 years ago, 15 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^][v]#24,802
A lot of the industrial punch that the US packed in the last century came from an abundance of resources and post-war wealth that resulted in production and business opportunity. That post-war opportunity was mostly open to anyone willing to jump into the game at that point, educated or not. It is telling perhaps that the author pinpoints the switch as coming in the late 70s, an era when when the post-WWII generation are now senior citizens.
One thing that strikes me about this is that pursuing a college education has traditionally been a consequence of having money, not the cause. Wealthy families sent their children to get some culture and higher education because they could afford to do so rather than sending them into the workforce right away. Their college educated children would then be prepared for employment as something more than factory workers or manual laborers. Is this maybe just a natural consequence of greater education for all? Should we expect an increasingly college-educated population to seek opportunity in the same way that their grandparents did?
Anonymous K replied with this 15 years ago, 15 seconds later, 1 hour after the original post[^][v]#24,803

Read the text and some of the posts here...
Let's be honest for a moment, the first dude lived from what? 1900 to 1970something?
He went throught 2 real wars and a cold war...and we all know that war is the awesome thing that bonds whole nations to work their asses off and create things that were unimaginable few years ago...
So much awesome stuff was developed for war, then hit mainstream...
Second dude lives from 1978 if I'm not mistaken, he's chilling in a "peace no war" era, siting on his porch, sippin' on Jim Beam... the only thing that drives people to achieve better now is money. Money can buy you everything (at least in the land I'm now in).
Don't get me wrong, I'm all into working for happiness and not just a sheer bloody determination to make my first million. I do a shitload in my free time to help out other. But I also want a trip to Australia, Guatemala, UK... and until I see airlines flying people all over the world for free, I'm afraid I'll just have to stick to work for money.
The article is fucked up, black/white. It's naive to write it in such a manner. It's just dumb and ignorant as shit.

The write of that Opinion Piece is the type of faggot who would read Eat, Pray, Love and seriously suggest that everyone should go on such a journey.

I didn’t recall the author saying that happiness itself is the best end-goal. I read it as an analysis of a current phenomenon. I didn’t see him arguing for anything.

He's arguing that Americans are now choosing to find "meaning" rather than make "money." There has to be a drive behind that.

What do you think, would your grandmother cook potatoes, then mash them by hands if she had a frozen mashed potato meal in the freezer ready to be heated up in the microwave? No she wouldn't.

So, in a nutshell, if we’ve solved the more basic issues in Maslow’s Hierarchy, we’d naturally move up to other things, and pursue those intellectual curiosities?

Except, that's not what's happening. The bottom 80% of Americans have been on a downward trend since about 1979.

The most obnoxious part for me is the author's condescending claim that "Sam wasn't the most refined person"... as opposed to the Renaissance Man of the 21st century, who plays Farmville or tweets about "modern art" (John Grisham, Dan Brown or Stephanie Meyer?) from his 'daring' vacation to Miami Beach. Vomit. The rest is largely just a variation of hackneyed ideas about capitalism's need to maximize efficiency by minimizing labour.

Yeah, try going on meaningful pursuits when you're exhausted from working two jobs.

Also, I do not think that is an example of hyperbole. Hyperbole would be something like, "I'm hungry enough to eat a horse!"

> I am listening. What did I miss? I am not arguing I promise. I will listen.
The point is that inequality itself is the source of the problem. Giving away money does some good, but is merely a bandage that has its own flaws.
Reducing the incredible wealth at the top, while increasing wages and stability for the rest of the people, is itself the most appropriate solution. The rich just need to stop using their power to further their own ridiculous wealth.
…and don't just give me your Trickle-Down bullshit; Reaganomics are long-debunked, and we all know that only the most paltry of scraps are what trickle down. (Not talking to Matt, just pre-empting the obvious reply.)

Exactly! It's not that that bottom have voluntarily relinquished their wealth in exchange for some nebulous and obscure "meaning", but that the rich are moving the entire economic structure in the US backwards.

Because you do piss-all good with a large portion of that money except put hardworking, kind people out of work, or into under-employment. Your reluctance to contribute value to the economy unless it provides you with far greater power, and use that power to squeeze more into your pockets is problematic.
Fair wages for fine work; the working classes need patrons, as the churches have fallen out of power, and the money became concentrated in a small group who had exploited the system (often legally) in unethical manners have failed to distribute the wealth as good as some Godlike Emperor or the church have.
I don't call for a regression of standards, or an adoption of the historical unethical behaviors of the previous forms of government, but I want something akin to their civic and social structure, with an appreciation for craftsmanship.
And, a merger of our learnings about equality, medicine, creativity, and standardization, amongst the simple aesthetic quality of life beyond materialism.
*sorry, high and I finally have time to read and write for entertainment**
