Myself neither. I think that work ethic should be universal to no matter what one does, be it studying or working. Emphasis on one does not make the other less important in my opinion.

They each compliment one another. It's like asking if it's more important to be a good husband or be a good father.
The main reason employers look at GPA is because it shows that you had the sort of commitment in school that they want you to have on the job. In some ways, GPA is more important than your major, as some employers hire college grads simply because they see college as an accomplishment that sets you apart from other applicants.
Being a good student is important in and of itself, though. Your education is something that you should do for yourself and not just for companies you'll work for in the future. It's important to remember to never stop learning just because you think you're done with school. Learning should be a lifetime experience. It will make you a more interesting person and take you places in life.
