The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said the program began Monday. It allows low-level offenders with fewer than two years time remaining on their sentence to apply to be released from prison to serve the remainder of their sentence in a community-based program.
To qualify, the mothers must have been the primary caregiver just before incarceration.
"They definitely deserve the equal opportunities that the mothers do," said [Terry] Moore. "I think if we look at the children, what's in the best interest of the children, then we have to go that route. You have to make it available to the parent, whether the parent is a father or a mother."
Spokeswoman Dana Toyama said the bill that made the program possible, SB 1266, was written with women in mind, because they tend to be the primary caregivers.
Toyama said constitutionally CDCR cannot bar men from applying to participate in the program, but she said they do not have the necessary programs currently in place to approve their participation.
"Right now, we are not offering it to them, but they cant' be statutorily excluded .We just don't have the resources to offer it to male inmates," Toyama said. She also said they do not have a date set to start extending the program to men.

Type of crime, likelihood of reoffending, behavior in prison. Things a parole board would typically consider. I think it's reasonable to take into account the type of family support an offender has, but to exclude anyone who's not a parent from consideration is really problematic imo.
Too bad if they don't have the resources to handle that - that's not an excuse for exclusionary practices.

There are some really good single moms out there, but the mother can be shitty ass all hell and the dad can be great, and the mother will still get custody. Mothers practically have to commit murder to not get custody. Although this topic isn't about custody, its a fucking shame to see the discrimination is even considered, much less implemented. Its like they didn't think about the dads at all, until they got called out on it of course.

It's a good thing people are starting to comprehend the anti-male bias in the justice industry. The androphobia touched on by this article is relatively tame, though I am pleasantly surprised a mainstream news writer was courageous enough to acknowledge this discrimination.

I was a 'troubled kid' and she has told me I almost caused her to have a mental breakdown several times and she almost committed herself because of me. My adoptive father died around my seccond birthday, leaving me with my first memory of him being taken out of the house on a stretcher, the last time he was home before the cancer took him. He was a correctional officer at Pelican Bay State Penitentiary, so my mom got a good ammount of money from the prison system which let her be able to be a stay at home mom till I was in 6th grade, when we had to sell the house we had built and bought when my father had transferee from Stockton to Crescent City. She ended up getting a job at the apartment complex where we lived, and most of her 'raises' were just money off rent, which was pretty cool, we paid about half as much as normal for our two bedroom 'townhouse' duplex apartment. and our neighbors were always pretty cool so that was cool.
I call her once a week at least, and she helps me out with money when she can. I'm glad she instilled me with some sense of pride, because I don't ask her for financial help too often, and when i do, she is able to send a little more than i need.
I was raised Upper Lower class, and i haven't advanced to lower middle class yet, but I hope to eventually.
