It can take several tries and minutes for western slaughter methods (bolt through the brain) to kill the animal. Halal involves perforating the jugular artery, causing the animal to lose conciousness within seconds.

I've never worked in a slaughterhouse subscribing to either method, so I really can't make that assessment. I have a feeling that I would much rather be knocked out and killed than have my throat cut halfway through while I was conscious though.
Anonymous J replied with this 15 years ago, 20 seconds later, 5 hours after the original post[^][v]#226,660
Yes. One causes loss of conciousness within seconds. The other requires the animal be electrocuted and shot with a bolt gun, which often fails to kill immediately.
I notice that you're simply calling me wrong and implying insults rather than saying why I'm wrong. Very poor form. I shan't be debating someone who opens like that. Good day.

And yet you can decide that one is more humane than the other, LOL. I've visited slaughterhouses dealing in both types. Western meat production is very cruel throughout. Halal is not much better, but is still marginally so.

I doubt the cows are aware of much. If the interest in "humane" killing is minimizing pain and suffering, then I would probably go with stunning and killing.

What do I have go on? Your expert evidence after assuring me that you thoroughly visited multiple slaughterhouses to make your own professional assessment? I trust during these visits you have interviewed the dying cattle to assess they were conscious and in pain for no more than a few seconds on each occasion? Can I assume that you have conducted follow-up research into the nature of bovine conscious and the perception of pain and are fully qualified to comment on the time and extent of suffering involved in various methods of slaughter? No. I can't. From you I have only the vague assurances of some guy on the Internet claiming he knows what is best for cattle. Away with you vile simpleton!

Nonsense. I am simply of the opinion that being stunned and killed is preferable to having your throat sliced open while conscious. I feel this is not an entirely irrational view. While I've never actually experienced either of those things, I have a good idea which one likely involves more pain and suffering.

Based on the idea that I'd rather not be conscious while suffering. On the other side, I have only your stated opinion that slitting throats is more humane. You have offered no evidence to sway me at all. It's pretty easy call from here.
green (OP) replied with this 15 years ago, 5 minutes later, 6 hours after the original post[^][v]#226,711

That's because you would have awareness that your throat was about to be slit, causing mental anguish. Cows have no such awareness, and the process also causes death very quickly -- within 15 seconds.

I don't know that those research articles have helped. Temple Grandin states outright that "Slaughter without stunning is controversial from an animal welfare standpoint." While Grandin argues that smaller animals like sheep and goats "will be insensible within 10 seconds", there are still problems with kosher and halal killing when it goes perfectly. (which it doesn't always)
From a summary in Grandin's Welfare During Slaughter without stunning (Kosher or Halal) differences between Sheep and Cattle:
Calves and cattle take a longer period of time to become insensible and they are more likely to have a prolonged period of insensibility. The time to loss of insensibility when good cutting technique is used will range from 17 sec to 85 sec (Blackmore 1984, Blackmore et al 1983, Gregory and Wotton, 1984, Grandin 2010, Daly et al 1988, Gregory et al 2010). Some cattle may have prolonged periods of sensibility lasting up to 385 seconds (Blackmore, 1984).
This is a far cry from the mere seconds you seem to claim it takes. Did you read these before citing them?

Does the suffering of the animal really matter though? Once it dies all existence ends and the animal is blissfully unaware that it ever existed or suffered. And yes, I feel the same way about human suffering too.
