Seth only saw them pick up his friend while he screamed, he probably didn't know they were most likely child rapists. He likes their car that's all and it's not like Seth has lots of friends or adults to talk to.

Yeah I don't think he did it. I heard this guy somewhere talking about how this movie was about the birth of a killer or something and I was wondering if anyone actually thought that.
Meanwhile we have the mother predicting his father would one day get incinerated. Forcing Seth to drink water, the morning after his friend is found in the water tank. His brother tells Seth it was always their mother who killed the chickens and it looks like a chicken shed that his other friend was found in. Dolphin is seducing her oldest son away.

I think the film is playing a bit on the idea that monsters are created like the monsters that the drifters are. So that scene where they ask Seth if he's coming with them too as dolphin is doing, it's like not yet, he still has his brother so he's not going to become a monster just yet but then his brother is shattered and he realizes that now he's truly alone in this hell that apparently is Idaho in the 1940s something.
