Pay isn't the only issue. Plenty of people get by on 7.25 an hour, they just have to live within their means. One of the big reasons we got into this financial crisis is because so many people lived in a way they couldn't afford to sustain.

Are you 15 and never had a job before? You can't just "find a way" unless by find a way you mean find a way to get paid more, and for some people that's not gonna happen unless the minimum wage is raised so that they'll have at least a small opportunity to find a way to save money and get somewhere.

With the cost of living the way it is, I don't see how anyone can get by on roughly $14,500/year, and that's assuming their employer gives them full-time hours. The minimum wage, as it is right now, is not a livable wage.

Have you ever considered that minimum wage is mostly for the low-rank, new employees. Even fast food restaurants will pay around $10/hour after a few months working there (in my experience).
I do understand fully that living on minimum wage is practically impossible, but you have to take into account the fact that businesses will raise their prices to cover the losses sustained in having to pay more. That would pretty much even out any minimum wage increase.

Yes, that is true. But what about the places that don't raise you up to $10/hour after working there for a few months? And starting off at minimum wage and working your way up as a teenager might be fine, but what about the people who get laid off and have families to support and can only find minimum wage jobs in the current job market. Is it fair to them and there families to work for several months before finally getting paid better? Is the labor you give to the company when you first start working there that much different from the labor you give them a few months down the line? You're right that almost no one pays minimum wage anymore. I've never worked for minimum wage, even when I just started out bagging groceries when I was 17. That's all the more reason why the minimum wage should be raised. If grocery stores can afford to pay baggers and cart pushers more than minimum wage, any company that is only paying minimum wage is blatantly exploiting their employees, and it's especially a problem right now because of the way the economy is. The minimum wage wasn't a hot issue a few years ago, because almost no one was getting paid minimum wage, but now the job market is set up so that employers can pay minimum wage and exploit those who are desperate for work. $7.25/hour is practically slave labor with today's costs of living, especially when you consider inflation over the past 10 years.

Yes, sometimes businesses will have to raise their prices to cover the costs, but most of the time they won't raise their prices because they know that doing so can cause them to lose business. Most businesses have their prices set to maximize profit, and raising the minimum wage simply means they'll have to share some of that profit with their employees. Raising the minimum wage can sometimes cause prices to go up and therefore create inflation, but as I pointed out, there has been so much inflation over the years that raising the minimum wage probably won't force it up any higher.

Businesses fail all the time. Businesses will still go out of business even if there were no minimum wage, and in the few rare cases where paying their employees a decent wage is the straw breaks the camel's back, I still have no sympathy. "Oh if would just exploit our employees and not pay them jack shit, then our business will just barely keep its head above the water." Fuck those businesses. Let them go under.

If anything, it's the DOLLAR that should be decreased. Even though our current (as of 2010) minimum wages may look higher, they are actually worth less than the 90's minimum wage. Did you get that right? WE'RE BEING PAYED EVEN LESS THAN WHAT WE WERE BEING PAYED TWENTY YEARS AGO AND YOU WANT TO ELIMINATE THE VERY THING PROTECTING US FROM THE BAD SIDE OF INFLATION WITHOUT ELIMINATING INFLATION ITSELF.

OK, so those people who you're mad at for not working, are doing exactly what you say they should do, which is not work for companies that are going to exploit them. They're protesting because they want to work, they just want to work at a livable wage.

This. The minimum wage hasn't even been adjusted enough to account for inflation. Normally, raising the minimum wage would cause inflation, but in this case, we would just be adjusting it to catch up with the inflation that has taken place.

I'm pretty liberal on just about everything, but I haven't seen any evidence (or any convincing arguments) that increasing the minimum wage really helps long term. I realize the current standard isn't a living wage, but I can't imagine a true living wage ever becoming the standard minimum wage without a major restructuring of the economy, which no one (of any party) would stand for. These ten- or fifteen-cent raises don't mean shit really.

You're absolutely right that 10 and 15 cent raises don't mean shit, and you're also absolutely right about the major restructuring of the economy. A major restructuring of the economy is exactly what we need. Jacking up the minimum wage would be one of the first steps IMO.
