left bookcase is penguin classics, middle is hardcovers (Britannica's Great Books collection, A series by Churchill, and some belonging to the Left Book Club can be seen there (not encyclopedias lol), and right is religious works.
Why would I keep books I have read (unless they're pretty)? I gave away about 1000 earlier this year that I have read. Haven't have much reading time since I started college.
EDIT: I may actually have a 4 volume encyclopedia called "The World of Children" that I purchased for it's lovely embossed covers.

I find that if you don't have a guide alongside you (either a book or a teacher/scholar), the Bible can seem impenetrable and/or boring. Once you have a better understanding of how, why, and when it was written (from a purely academic and non-religious perspective), it starts to make sense and becomes readable.

I really like the language used in the KJV, so I bought it. If you have a version that has similar flowery prose, but is more intelligible, then I'd love to hear a recommendation. Also, none of the Bibles that I've ever seen have that preface in them.

Not really. The bible wasn't written in flowery prose, so most translations don't try to add it in. You could get the NKJV I guess?
KJV won't have prefaces because it's marketed towards cults &c. Almost all modern translations will at least have a very basic preface to each of the books, briefly touching upon the facts, but focusing on the spiritual lessons. I thought it was special when I got a New English Bible which doesn't have prefaces or chapter/verses breaks &c.
I prefer Catholic translations. They're not as fundamentalist as a lot of the other sects, and usually have really useful footnotes and prefaces. Plus you get the Apocrypha, so it's better value.

Ah, okay. The "How to read the Bible" book is a completely academic exploration of the books of the bible though, so it probably is more in-depth in the actual history and scholarly conclusions than what is found in prefaces in the Bible.

Yes, they are necessary for further study, but one should not get lost in a casual reading (unless one is reading a 400 year old translation of faulty manuscripts lol).
