Topic: Analog clocks are kind of cool.

Such a neat invention that can tell you the time without having to rely on electricity.

I owned a grandfather clock for like 2 weeks before the other half the family rolled up in a truck and took off with it. Looking up the prices I see what happened - grandma gave me a $4,000 antique and the sharks found out. Yeah I'm retarded but it doesn't mean I wouldn't have enjoyed a noisy old clock in my studio apartment. Nobody has it now so I assume they sold it to an antique shop.

I'm not going to lie. I can believe the "Great Clockmaker" analogy for the creation of the universe. I sort of already subscribed to that idea anyway.

Well, everything does seem to have a cadence so the hippie vibes I go with are in agreement with you there.

Analogue doesn't mean no electricity. This is an analogue clock (it's powered by AA batteries).

This is a digital clock. It uses digits, hence the name.

Both are powered by electricity.

it seems that people entertain the idea that reality is based on whatever the recent human innovation is -- witness the peculiar idea that we "live in a simulation"

Most watches and clocks have batteries. Maybe Catherine is talking about wind-up watches.

The number of people who don't know what digital means in the context of clocks and watches is quite bizarre.

What digits does it use that the other one doesn't

You're right that digital in the context of a clock refers to the use of digits rather than hour & minute hands to show time, but by far the more common usage, especially these days and also especially when comparing with analogue devices is digital = discrete digits (0 and 1) which make up a non-continuous signal, and analogue = continuous / a variable quantity which makes up a smooth signal.

On TC you said you wanted to kinda live off the grid. Time then would be of no value.

Ah yes, Catherine may be referring to mechanical watches which do not use electrical energy as a power source. These mechanical watches do however use power which is typically stored in a spring which must be wound either manually or by harvesting kinetic energy from the motion of the wearer's wrist.

There is one that winds its self. Air pressure change does the work of winding.

I'll admit it, I love the simulation theory and dead internet theory stuff. Then it also became painfully obvious the later content surrounding this stuff was just aped or AI barf for clicks.

so is an analogue clock presented on a computer screen also digital?
