Topic: I'm tired of always having to guesstimate the costs of gas.

Anonymous A started this discussion 1 month ago #125,273

So, I figured, why not learn a mathematical formula that would tell me an exact approximation of funds I need to provide for certain intervals of my gas tank.

Does anyone know if any mathematical formulas that:
A) Can calculate the cost, represented as a variable to cover changes in price, and apply that to the number of gallons needed to fill a car tank, also represented as a variable to accommodate gas tank sizes.
B) Easier to understand for anyone with their highest math level being Algebra I & II, also Trig.
C) Can be inputted on a single line in a calculator for easy calculations.

?

Please and thank you.

T=tank capacity.
P=price per gallon
F=fuel in tank already
C=cost

(T-F)P=c

Cost = P × (T - C) × (1 + R) × (1 / E) × (1 - V)

Where:

P = price per gallon of fuel

T = total tank capacity in gallons

C = current amount of fuel in the tank in gallons

R = tax rate (decimal)

E = fuel efficiency (decimal)

V = volume loss (decimal)
