the USA has a peculiar system where in a great many areas, you declare a party affiliation at the voting place or with registration. in ordinary countries, only weird nerds join political parties, so people aren't pushed to feel part of a specific team so much. couple that with being a party whose overwhelming purpose is the preserve and promote the position of the monied elite, and have people in ownership and control of major media of all types, this is what you get.
