Topic: there was a time when the media would speak of a trend called "latchkey kids"

boof started this discussion 2 months ago #124,873

I find this confusing, as I have only ever applied a key to a doorknob keyhole, sometimes a second more secure bolt lock in the door. Where's the fuckin latch? What's a latch even look like

I thought the same.

My house used to have two keys, you'd unlock the door and then unlock the latch higher up to open the door.

Latchkeys are a key (!) plot point in Hitchcock's Dial M For Murder.

do they look like normal keys, or do they have that ancient looking key shape with 90 degree angles

@1,355,496 (D)
from the outside? wouldn't that be a deadbolt?

We always called it a latch so I assumed thats's what the term was about

Anyway I googled and the latch is specifically the part of the door that keeps it shut by going into the hole in the door frame and necessitating the turning of a door handle to open the door, all doors have one except free swinging ones I guess

But yes two keys to unlock the door from the outside but on the inside was a little handle you could just turn.

I'm glad the media has moved on, but they will pick a new annoying "word of 2025" for this year too.
