The Roman Empire survived a lot of bad Emperors, though. Come to think of it, all of the really notorious bad ones (Caligula, Elagabalus, Commodus, etc.) actually happened relatively early on.
I generally get try to be cautious about making comparisons between Roman politics and modern politics. But I think a good lesson you can take from the Romans, broadly speaking, is that a bad leader is temporary and won't necessarily destroy your country, as long as you've got strong institutions that will still go on functioning regardless.
