America is never in a million years leaving NATO, regardless of what Trump says. Congress would have to approve it and it's not going to happen. NATO is how the US maintains its economic, military and geopolitical dominance over Europe. As the saying goes, its purpose is to "keep the Americans in, the Russians out and the Germans down". This posturing from Trump is just a tactic to get Europe to increase their defence budgets, i.e, to buy even more American weapons and/or fire up their own energy-guzzling domestic weapons production facilities using - you guessed it - expensive American LNG.

Trump could very easily just not respond to an attack on a NATO member. He doesn't need to leave it to render it effectively neutered, which is something he wants to do for reasons that only make sense to him.

Doesn't Article 5 basically say "you are required to do whatever you feel like doing" in regards to assisting other NATO members? I remember quite a few of our bestest European friends refused to join us on our Afghan escapade when we tried to invoke Article 5 after 9/11 (not mad about it to be clear, nation building is pants on head retarded and the sand people have little desire to be liberal democrats).

Who refused to join? Also the action taken is whatever is necessary to end the threat to NATO, though obviously different countries have different abilities to help.

France provided military assistance for Afghanistan idk what you're talking about. They didn't go with us into Iraq because that was a blatantly propagandized sham war that destabilized the entire world.

That was about Iraq, Article 5 was triggered for Afghanistan because Taliban had Al-Quieda training camps.
