It isn't a legal thing (yet) but it wasn't until I was teenager that I realized just how absolutely fucking absurd it is that schools force kids to say the pledge of allegiance every single morning. Sure it was "optional" but teachers and other students alike would shame you and treat you like a delinquent for sitting it out. What kind of brainwashing cult bullshit is that?

Again you aren't really "forced", as in you won't get in trouble or kicked out for not participating. But basically everyone in the country has been conditioned to believe that it's perfectly normal, and that choosing not to recite it must mean you hate your country. I'm sure you've seen it when interacting with Americans online, but if you don't believe that the US is the greatest country on earth and every other country is envious of our greatness, then you must hate America, freedom, its people, etc. so in many americans' minds, not reciting the pledge every day puts you into the latter category.
