Former Shawnee Mission West High School teacher Michelle Preston, 27, has been charged with three counts of unlawful sexual relations.
In March, police launched an investigation after a nude photo of Preston was shared by students. Preston is alleged to have had relations with three different students.
A special law in Kansas addresses the student-teacher relationship. The Johnson County District Attorney says it doesn't matter if you're 18 or 13-years-old, it's against the law to have sex with students.
" I know a number of teachers, from various school districts," D-A Steve Howe said. "They have all commented to me that they go out of their way not to put themselves in difficult situations like that. I think there's a lot of training that goes on with teachers in not putting themselves in difficult situations so people don't assume that something inappropriate is going on."
The former Psychology and World Geography teacher was then in a single-car accident where her car went off an embankment at 247th Street in Miami County, Kansas. The police report said her car left the cliff ledge and vaulted into the opposite side embankment of a creek.
In May, the Shawnee Mission School District did not renew Preston's contract citing specifically that Preston had violated the board's policy of On Staff Student Relations. If convicted, Preston faces between two and ten years in prison. The former teacher's first court appearance is schedule for October 4. She is out on bond.
