If someone thought that your work of fiction was a disguised criticism of the English rule over Ireland for instance, you could catch some shit. Also, the book was published simultaneously at many printers in an effort to get ahead of piracy, em that is, copyright infringement. Though I don't know what copyright rules then and there were anyway

I don't see how it's any different from cancel culture now. I don't know how authors (or creative types in general) even deal with reviews - I personally couldn't read them. Humans are awful.
