Now that you're back, I remember before you left you told us about having to personally refuel a Pam Am passenger jet or something? I don't really remember, but I thought it sounded interesting as I'm into aviation. Could you tell us what happened again?

Howard Hughes' 747 was low on fuel on the tarmac so Syntax gave the pilot his credit card to gas it up.

Pan Am flight and the refuelers refused to accept the pilots company credit card. 1991 or 92 or so. A few weeks later Pan Am went out of business.
I had a fancy Amex no limit credit card, which was costly to the company I worked for and offered it up for refueling. On return to New York Pan they had a check waiting for me and a free ticket which of course was never used re bankruptcy.

Years later she moved to San Diego and I ran into her at a market.

So, when commercial jets need to refuel, the pilot has to use his credit card, and the jet just has to sit and wait there until they can find the money? I never knew it worked that way. What did you at Hughes' company?

I have no clue what the normal procedure for refueling is. I was exhausted from that trip and the ideal of being stranded for even one more hour - I would have paid out of pocket to get home.
90% of my work for Hughes Aircraft was for Imaging Radar development - Radar waves to bounce off an object and take a photo that looked like a lens was used. One could even look down from the aircraft and look underground.
Totally R&D stuff that took decades to develop. Decades later at Qualcomm I modified a Cell phone - about 3 days work to use the CDMA format and take a photo from outside a room and look into the room next door. The founder of that company was an old Professor of mine and I did that to shock him. He had no clue his early papers on spread spectrum was the basis for lots of Spy Satellites.
