Sugar-rich varieties called sweet corn are grown for human consumption, while field corn varieties are used for animal feed, for uses such as cornmeal or masa, corn starch, corn syrup, pressing into corn oil, alcoholic beverages like bourbon whiskey, and as chemical feedstocks including ethanol and other biofuels.
So I was at a radio station in Wisconsin in the middle of nowhere - 3 day gig and the place was surrounded by a corn field. I asked the people there if they tried the fresh corn and they said HEY We will boil up a pot of water and you can pick and eat the freshest of corn. I was so happy to try and well totally pranked. The corn was what they called pig corn. Super starchy and not a hint of sugar. DISGUSTING.
