The film was released in 1998. Pixar had twenty-seven (27) years to release a sequel. During this time we got arguably better films and even sequels to those films. Yet the closest thing that “A Bug’s Life” got was an amusement park area and a recent documentary about real life insects.
I’m honestly surprised this never got a remastered edition since the animation was really rudimentary and archaic. I don’t really care one way or the other about the film. It just surprises me how when Pixar started to create sequels this one was never considered. Not even today when the studio announced even more sequels have they announced, “A Bug’s Life 2.”

To go there, consider the political landscape. It's easier to meet diversity quota pumping out a Soul, Luca, or Turning Red than it is to churn out Bugs 2 where you can't immediately show that on the poster. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Pixar_films

Or maybe it’s because they don’t want to encourage any insurrection behavior given the current political landscape and January 6th, 2021.
The film’s premise was kind of about the small minority group (grasshoppers) at the top who is rich in food keeping the lower levels of a social hierarchy (ants) in check so they keep producing the food.
But this wouldn’t explain why they never did a sequel prior to 2016.

I think I figured out why this film never got a true sequel throughout the decades and it has to do with the hidden subtext of the villain's motivations.
