it was a time travel and alternate timeline story. something fucked up the past so that the current Enterprise still had a Yar, and before things got back to more normal, Yar got to survive by going with a ship that went back in time. many episodes later, we find out that Yar had a kid, Yar Jr., who was raised with the Romulans, and it was Yar Jr. that we saw in that new episode.
