Using shopify was dumb. He could have used a self-hosted ecommerce service, since this would obviously get pushback.

A barebones WP install with WooCommerce would've been a lot more resilient. Sure your payment gateway would twat you eventually, but then it just becomes a game of whack-a-mole while you find alternatives.

Shopify put out a message that the shop was not closed for the shirt, but for the stunt selling of a single shirt not being a legit commerce for making money. You can still get Nazi-themed merchandise from other sellers.
