Against my company. A competitor is offering me straight up cash for information about a product line we produce, it's still in development and so the breakthroughs we engineers have made would be worth a lot of money, apparently $75,000 dollars. I have also been offered a job (which is where the money comes in as a bonus) if I defect and bring over all of the sensitive files and documents associated with our project.
My concern is that as a contractor on this project we are paid, technically, by the defense department through DARPA. I've been told by a lawyer that it would not be illegal to share what I know as long as I don't share propritary files and documents (which is what they want me to do) because the security clearance on this is low i wouldn't be sharing state secrets necessarily, but I would be breking the law and could be sued.

If it has any sort of security clearance, assuming you are caught you could be tried under the "Espionage Act".
Proceed with extreme caution, spending 10 years in ADX Florence isn't worth a few thousand dollars.

I don't think so, the company that wants to hire me isn't even based out of the states, so I should be fine. Besides, this project is a non-starter, it's not going to work any time soon, too many technical hurdles. I might as well sell the secrets of Star Trek teleporter technology.

The pay is superb, the 75k is a bonus. They've offered me a 5 year contract and have given me zero indication that there is actual work they need me to do. They said i'd "work" from home, basically it sounds like i'd be free to do whatever I wanted, including working somewhere else.
I think they just want to pay me, and they want to pay me a lot for merely enough information to replicate one material that comes from our research. They could give a fuck about the shit we're doing, they just want our method of manufacturing one (very complicated) "stuff."
