That's the last time you will have to do it, too!

Why isn't your tax done automatically? Unless you're self employed there should be no reason to do your own taxes

In the USA, the government already knows all our tax information, but we have to fill it out again on a bunch of confusing, labyrinthine forms. USA! USA! USA!

Sp does your tax come out every pay check or do you get 100% of your pay and have to save a percentage to give back to the irs?

It comes out of your paycheck, AND you have to file taxes too, even though they already know all the information. It's insane.

That does sound insane. We need dw in here to give his opinion too

It's incredibly stupid. And if you get anything wrong, you risk being audited or worse.

It is fascinating to me. I love it when, on American TV shows, the characters get excited about suddenly getting a cash windfall because of "tax refunds". Or when they have an episode where a lazy character is rushing to do their taxes on time, and the other characters tut at them, as if they have disrespected some sacred cultural ritual.

It is a strange and magical practice. I don't want to understand how it works, because that would take away the mystery of it all.

You can choose which of those to do. Your employer specifically asks you which option you elect for and if you choose to withhold you can choose how much is withheld

What's going to really blow your mind is that if you aren't a W-4 employee, you must estimate how much income you will have in the next year and pay estimated taxes quarterly on income you have yet to earn, and if you refuse they will just make up a number out of nothing and you will pay a penalty when you next file your taxes!

Unless you are a farmer or fisherman. Then you pay no penalty for having unpredictable income!

Some time ago, I was both surprised and greatly amused to learn that you dumb yanks are expected to pay federal income tax even whilst working outside your own shithole country. Lol!

That's the same as being self employed in the UK.

I just remembered that if yanks don't want to pay money to their shithole country's idiot government whilst working abroad, they have to pay thousands of dollars to renounce their citizenship. Lmao!
