I'm hosting my own email on a server now; waiting to see how long it takes before it's hacked or exploited and I'm banned for sending spam

I hear you can get a similar experience buying a D-Link router or Chinese name cellphone. Many options with your hobby.

But hosting your own email is madness tbh. Email bloody sucks to self-host in the long run.

that's what I have been told as well; i was actually banned from my last host because i set up an email server that was compromised and racked up like a dozen abuse reports in two days. i am giving it one more shot before i break down and use an email service instead

Isn't there a way that it only works if you physically put a key somewhere

it's currently set up to only allow server login with a private key, however there will always be vulnerabilities

All of the major email providers will treat your self-hosted email server with hostility for a long time, even if you keep everything up to date, secure and properly configured. If you don't mind being treated like a second-class netizen by BIG EMAIL, go for it. China will definitely try to break in once they notice you, so be prepared

I dabbled in self-hosted email and it was a constant drain for no real benefit. It seemed appealing on paper, and felt like a fun challenge going into it, but it sucks. Things will break constantly and you'll waste so much time diagnosing random dropped emails and myriad other issues. Plus with no or low domain reputation, many other emails providers will bully you forever and your emails will go to Junk/Spam more often than not. I gave up and have been using Migadu, which is fantastic, since 2016.

Yeah, this exactly.
