Topic: What motivates anti-vaxxers?

Anonymous A started this discussion 1 year ago #122,299

It's not like they did as serious scientific study of vaccines and made a rational conclusion. The majority of them have no medical training whatsoever. There's some kind of psychological phenomenon behind people who think they know more than the world's top experts. Is it that they get to feel special, like they are in a small club that really knows the truth? Or is it something else?

Yes. Let's start there. What would make you think you, with no training whatsoever, know more than the people who have devoted their lives to a topic? It's an honest question.

Sure! I'll chime in. I was a bit of a hippie, or at least a flakey hipster. There's a lot of things normal folk do that we sometimes do without, and it's not always rational or particularly strong conviction. For me it wasn't to fight the man, politics, or any of that - hippies tend to do things more natural. I go to herbal if possible, but when things get serious, sure, I'll trust modern medicine. In the end I dit get a couple of shots. The math was there, it'd kill less people, symptoms would possibly be reduced if I did catch it. Wasn't a massive hill to die on but it sounded like the right thing to do. I went back to my teas and vegetables and shit after that though. So anti-vax to a point, but I'd never shit on anyone that gets all shots that are placed in front of them. Many lives have been saved since we started doing this stuff.

What exactly is a vaccine? If you need booster shots every 6 months just to stay vaccinated is that still really a vaccine? That sounds like a big pharma subscription to me.
