I search "youtube to mp4" and use whichever link allows a resolution I can work with (prefer 480 or 720 for most). Reminds me of my Warez days with how scuzzy those sites are though lol.

oh certainly - I've found some, got a long list, currently there's like three of them that even work without a message coming up saying it's fucked. maybe due to not keeping up with youtube changing its shit all the time

All of those sites are using youtube-dl. If you want to run it locally, you can. Not running linux? No problem! You can find a cross-platform electron wrapper that uses youtube-dl and download videos from across the web with a convenient GUI:

yt-dlp is the most up to date fork, btw

maybe find a gui for that, if you don't like typing
