If I pay my tv license weekly, can I cancel the rest of the payments if I get rid of my tv? Because it would be pointless to pay for something I'm not watching.

It's the same here in Ireland, it's ludicrous, you might never watch BBC yet you still have to pay it.
Even if you don't have a TV in your home you still have the pay the "TV" licence if you have a desktop, laptop, etc.

We have something similar to the BBC, its called PBS, no commercials. Its in part funded by private, voluntary donations, but I don't know if its wholly supported that way.

Nah, they have a lot of original programming, very good stuff (not all of it of course). Mostly documentaries and a few kids shows, they don't beg much.

PBS just recently lost a lot of federal funding. They subsist mostly on contributions during annual donation drives. NPR (national public radio) is also very, very good. Their news programming is top-notch.

Sounds very much like PBS, its different for every region, tons of regions and we have NPR for radio (national public radio). Two separate entities to accomplish the same thing as the BBC. I know the NPR is in part paid through taxes, probably mostly paid by taxpayers.

There are so many commercials on some channels, its basically unwatchable (MTV comes to mind). Its the exact reason I gave up TV, not enough good stuff to justify the costs, I can see what I want through the internet at roughly half the cost with little to no commercials.

I've never paid for a TV license in the 7 years I have lived alone.
Although last year, we did have someone come round to see if we had a TV. I refused him entry and there was fuck all he could do. No fine, no nothing.

My point is that while other "competitive market" news sources compete to bring you celebrity gossip and political mudslinging, NPR competes to show you the same journalism that existed during Watergate, Iran contra, and the whistle blowing in the 90s. NPR, like BBC world news, is actual news and not a painted whore version of it.
