We can think of pairs of letter codes that are inverses of each other. That is, dots are traded for bars, and vice versa.

e/t  ●/▬
i/m  ● ●/▬ ▬
s/o  ● ● ●/▬ ▬ ▬
a/n  ● ▬/▬ ●
w/d  ● ▬ ▬/▬ ● ●
j/b  ● ▬ ▬ ▬/▬ ● ● ●
u/g  ● ● ▬/▬ ▬ ●
r/k  ● ▬ ●/▬ ● ▬
l/y  ● ▬ ● ●/▬ ● ▬ ▬
p/x  ● ▬ ▬ ●/▬ ● ● ▬
f/q  ● ● ▬ ●/▬ ▬ ● ▬

no inverses: h, z, v, c
h - ● ● ● ●
z - ▬ ▬ ● ●
v - ● ● ● ▬
c - ▬ ● ▬ ●

Morse code letter pairs that are reverses of each other:

a/n  ● ▬/▬ ●
w/g  ● ▬ ▬/▬ ▬ ●
u/d  ● ● ▬/▬ ● ●
v/b  ● ● ● ▬/▬ ● ● ●
l/f  ● ▬ ● ●/● ● ▬ ●
y/q  ▬ ● ▬ ▬/▬ ▬ ● ▬

self reverses: e/●, t/▬, i/● ●, m/▬ ▬, s/● ● ●, o/▬ ▬ ▬, h/● ● ● ●, r/● ▬ ●, k/▬ ● ▬, p/● ▬ ▬ ●, x/▬ ● ● ▬
no reverses: j/● ▬ ▬ ▬, z/▬ ▬ ● ●, c/▬ ● ▬ ●

ah interesting that it would affect your eyes so much. we have been focusing on Morse code as a visual code, while in common practice, it is auditory. it is a whole new process to get the skill of recognizing the letters by ear. in that case, you don't really think about how many dots or dashes, but you listen to the overall sound to impress upon your mind

While I find that an animated mnemonic would be ideal for the visual recognition of Morse code, historically we have plenty of examples of static drawings instead.
