You simply have to be obscure enough. For example, I defeated Akinator by thinking of Mead With Juniper Berries (Skyrim Item). It got very close by first guessing Mead and then guessing Argonian Ale.

I tried the Locket of Saint Jiub and it guessed it quickly. You must have clicked the wrong answer if it really said it gave up, but that is user error.
