I've studied it a bit and know how it works, and I've sailed a very tiny, two-man boat. But I don't know the knots, nomenclature, and much more than the basics. I'd like to take up sailing as a hobby. Is there a less expensive way to get into it?

Paying for a yacht club membership and chumming up with the locals would probably be cheaper than bankrolling this one yourself.

I just looked up the local one here and it's $3000 for the application and about $700 a year for dues. Way cheaper than actually buying a boat yourself. @previous (D)

I'm an accomplished sailor. I once sailed in high winds and went so fast that my boat did a backflip.
