My metabolism just ain't what it used to be. Currently at my all time heaviest and feeling very insecure about it. I'm not overweight yet but I'm approaching the upper end of the "normal" BMI range. As an experiment I've been counting calories for the last week just to see what I'm consuming and damn it's hard to maintain a good deficit without just being hungry all the time.
Cutting out fast food will surely go a long way to help though, I was on the road for a couple months and was eating it far too often.

I've shaved a few by NOT cutting certain meals. Like asians, they never got fat eating rice. Or meals with tougher meats that slow you down and are filling (stew, or baked chicken and vegetables). It's not the miracle weight loss secret, but it has me maintaining about 7 lbs less than last year.
Also I'm cutting snacks. Instead of a box of candy (700 Calories) I'll only eat half and toss the rest in the glovebox for another day. Putting the box away is a similar motion as throwing it on the floor or whatever so it signals 'done' in my brain at least.

Cutting snacks is huge, good on you. I don't eat much candy but I like chips which I've mostly cut out even before this soft attempt at weight loss. I also snack on peanuts a lot which are very calorie dense so I need to reduce that too. Congrats on the progress you've made!

Not sure how it compares to other areas but they're a little over $6 at my local walmart. Apples and grapes have a little higher calorie count by volume but I think the convenience of them makes it worth it. I think I'm more likely to eat something healthy if I can just pick it up and eat it rather than having to carve it all up first.

It was upsetting to realize the fruit juice I drink most mornings is 90 calories per serving! The only time I drink soda anymore is when I go out to eat, but I haven't done that since I started this calorie counting experiment.

The same thing is happening to me. Some people call it going to seed. There's not much I can really do except exercise. I was thinner when I smoked, you can always take up smoking to be thinner.
