Topic: House of Lords

Anonymous A started this discussion 1 year ago #121,236

I’ve been reading about the House of Lords. They seem useless and mostly ceremonial. Why does Labour have such a hard-on for getting rid of it and removing hereditary peers? Why don’t they show the same contempt for the royals? It’s pretty much the same thing.

Just what a commoner would say.

The Lords legislate, so it directly effects the citizens. The Royals are much more symbolic and don't make laws.

Without the house of Lords, the house of commons would have nobody to hold them to account. Labour are megalomaniacs and want all the power without accountability (just like every other left wing dictator that's ever been).

They are absolutely not ceremonial lol. They have ceremonies, but have an active part in the legislation process. Any bill that passes the Commons must also pass the Lords, or else it is sent back.

Is that a trait unique to left-wing dictators

as I understand the origins of left/right distinctions from the history of France, right is for the maintenance of inherited wealth elite (the aristocracy) while left is for the more ordinary in society. whatever the fuck those murderous dictator assholes are is something altogether different

Imagine a dictator who is right wing. Now imagine he got severe brain damage and became left wing as a result.

Why does being "left wing" mean that a person cannot be a dictator?

Dream works think leftism means utopian socialist lite market economy democracies like his irrelevant country and conveniently excludes any government with a hard left economic system that has a dictator ie every communist nation to have ever existed

Anonymous A (OP) double-posted this 1 year ago, 2 minutes later, 4 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,326,303

according to dw economic system is secondary to power structure when determining whether a government is left wing or right wing

By that metric the USA at any point in history is more left wing than the USSR was because Russian people didn’t elect their leaders
