The North definitely had it better. I’m just saying, it wasn’t THAT bad like people make it out to be. They had free housing, free food, and had jobs. Not cars though (but massa didn’t get one either) they weren’t really a thing yet until the early 20th century. But if they were a thing, I’m sure free motor transportation would be part of the bargain as well.

Is a McDonalds cashier’s lot in life the same as a medieval serf? Comparing hypothetical people across different countries in different centuries with different political and economic systems is more or less pointless and absurd.

Ok, but do you think the average USSR citizen's lot in life was the same as a human chattel slave's? A straight answer would be preferred.

In general. The average person, for example, got a free apartment and many got free cars. I am, not saying it was great, but maybe not as bad as people think.

Remember when America's greatest living writer of the time (my own opinion) travelled through the Soviet Union and was amused to find that Western propaganda about the country was indeed a pile of scare-mongering self-congratulatory horseshit?
"This literary and photographic record of life under Joseph Stalin's rule is a historical document.[2] Steinbeck and Capa portray Soviet people as living in extremely different conditions from those in the reports among the West of the day: life in the cities and the country appears peaceful and very similar to that of other peoples in Europe at the time"

@OP there were decades where most werent allowed to travel as theyd just flee. so not that.
those perks are pretty good. but eastern europe had cars and such before socialism that were ok. food wasnt of good quality if it was cheap. officers willing to grill and fire you if you said bad things about the regime wasnt great either.
