A lot of new media is like this, by the time you have hundreds of people working on something, it in fact feels like hundreds of different people worked on it (in a loose ends all over the place way, not in a communist utopia kind of way).

I've always thought of a UK fallout setting to be more reminiscent of the 1970s, and with less direct nuclear devastation. I've always imagined it as a country destroyed by conventional warfare (due to the oil crisis and war in Europe), and radiation/fallout spreading over the country from Russia and other countries like happened with Chernobyl. So there would be random radstorms, acid rain, poisonous air and choking smog.
