I kind of figured since that is how one is supposed to type on a typewriter. Why wouldn't this carry over to the computer age?
It still feels weird though since I felt like I have been accustomed to typing the lazy way.

I trade bad posture (high seat, low desk) for better keyboard mobility. Agreed - faster (and delightful with a mechanical keyboard).
