I wonder if anyone has attempted to do fill/empty/refill cycles quickly until failure, just to see how long -- a bit risky, as failure can be dangerous

Mostly those are for people that use 2 canisters per season and the $8 outlay isn't that big of a deal. They're hopefully not going through them like energy drinks otherwise refilling or bigger canisters make more sense like you guys said.

It would cost nearly nothing to just make all of them officially refillable in the first place, but the pre-filled canister companies lobbied for the right to sell the "disposable" canisters that are slightly less safe to refill and illegal to sell refills for and then jacked up the price on the standard refillable canisters. They know customers would rather buy canisters once and refill them, so they've priced some customers out of buying the safer product and baked most of the price of refills into the standard canisters to make more money selling both the refillable cans and the disposables.
