Minichan

Topic: Upgraded Minichan to PHP 8

Anonymous A started this discussion 1 month ago #120,665

Works faster, safer, and feels good.

I like this BBS format and want to keep it alive.
Pondering where to publish this... New repo, or should I commit directly to https://github.com/mpsmc/Minichan? What’s your take?

Very likely adding AGPL on top of the existing MIT license.

Also have a spin-off with board creation and other new features. However, I'm thinking it might be more appropriate to launch it as a separate project.

Feedback? Comments?

Link to your repo? Publish your fork of Minichan and then create a pull request if you want to contribute back

New repo. Other repos are ancient. Minichan.net and Tinychan.net have both diverged a lot and neither have public repos anymore.

Rewrite it in anything other than PHP.

Run it through Claude or CodeQwen, translate it to python.

No dev in good standing has PHP installed on their system.

There's no reason not to just rewrite it from scratch. Keep the style, features, and basic functionality but write it from the ground up.

It comes from an era when PHP was terrible. Insecure and lacking in features. The shitty code was then extended and built upon by a young and inexperienced r04r who was excited to add new dependencies and JS frameworks etc which left it bloated and with so many requirements.

Minichan and Tinychan don't share any of their updates so we have nothing now. Just rewrite the damn thing!!

True, porting the php code to version 8 still leaves the project in absolute dependency hell. Hold my beer
