Mario is still the biggest game franchise. But with all this COD and Halo, it is turning into a multiplayer owned market. However one could argue was always as you had a 'Player 2 free play press any button'. But single player

he clearly didnt finish his thoughts on the future of single player games though, lol.
single player games will always be made, for one simple reason; networked multiplayer is hard to do well.
the other (complex) reason is that gamers don't have friends );

Sure, multiplayer is becoming more prominent, but that doesn't mean that single player games are in any way being phased out. You just can't do multiplayer with everything, nor should you.

There's demand for single player games as much as there is for multiplayer. Quite honestly it would be stupid for game developers to ignore either experience, but, some game genres don't work well in both modes.
Really, multiplayer is still mostly just deathmatch or some kind of variant on team death match. But if WoW taught me anything it's that the social side will keep people coming back waaaaaay longer than the actual game play will.

How does getting DLC for a single player game suddenly make it a multiplayer game?

Multiplayer means that the game supports multiple players, bud. No amount of expansions for New Vegas is going to make it so that you can play it with others.

both of those are hardcore games with a very small audience, single player games are definitely going to become rarer
