Why not? The word 'faggot' is a bit different to US ears; it never had the UK/Irish meaning of a contemptible/lazy person, which I think is lost on many Americans.

But regardless I think these modern attempts to sanitise everything are just stupid. It's a fun song! It's the Christmas favourite of everyone in the British Isles.

Who is sanitizing the song?

It's like having a Christmas song with the word nigger in it. Also, the singing doesn't seem that ear pleasing. It's more like a drinking song than a holiday song

He is saying that the word "faggot" in that song does not mean homosexual. In Irish dialect when the song was written, it meant "a contemptible, lazy person".

I understand

But if a classic American holiday song had someone calling someone else a spastic, Paki, he'd probably be like, This song isn't very Christmasy

Yeah, this.
@previous (Kook !!rcSrAtaAC)
True, but if spastic had some previous meaning before it was corrupted I'd probably find no problem with it.

It'll always be the song I associate with Christmas. It's a classic. It's very Christmassy to me and to most British people. I love it. I can understand why it's censored for some people's modern sensibilities though.

Spastic in the US is not as serious of a slur as it is in Britain, or so I've been told. People almost use it like the word "nerd" here

Is it Christmasy because it reminds people of cozy pubs?

Also, is it being censored?

tteh !MemesToDNA replied with this 1 year ago, 4 minutes later, 8 hours after the original post[^] [v] #1,319,776

@previous (Kook !!rcSrAtaAC)
Yeah spastic is basically "retard" here or worse, I'd say.

And yeah the lyrics are changed when it's played on the radio nowadays, usually. The whole 'debate' comes up every year. Most people just know it as a funny old Christmas song about being a drunken mess, even if the theme seems a bit different to most Christmas songs. It enters the charts every year.

Drugs (LSD & heroin) and alcohol abuse since the age of 5. This lead to all his teeth falling out. Blame his stupid parents for making him an alcoholic long before he even had half a chance to begin developing rational thought.

Why is it OK for you to call people retards when you know absolutely nothing about them, but you get all offended and want to censor others?

No they aren't. If you're talking about Fairy Tale of New York then the change to the setting of the song was largely due to their tour of the US, which began in NYC. Musically, MacGowan was also very much inspired by this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuyYc0gINbU

> but they live in the UK.
This may astound you, but sometimes people travel and get inspired by the places they travel to.

Yes,, but they have objectively higher living standards than those who live in Bongistan do now. It’d be like if Americans continually bitched and moaned about the tea tax in the present day. They need to stop crying.

> Well, think of songs meant to evoke warm feelings or family and togetherness, and then the word faggot is included

In the context of the song, the word "faggot" isn't used as a homosexual slur. This is at low point of the "tale" - the man is sitting in the drunk tank on Christmas eve, reminiscing about his old lover and the argument they had several years ago on Christmas eve, where she berated him for giving her nothing but lies and broken promises, and they called each other names. The high point (and the reason the song works as a Christmas song) is that despite all the failures and against all odds, he has kept her dreams with him, has built his dreams around hers and still loves her. It's very bitter-sweet and very Christmassy.
