It's technically not just Muhammad(pbuh). You also have to say it when you speak of any other islamic prophet including jesus(pbuh) and moses(pbuh)
Luckily, as you can see, there are ways to abbreviate this in text. And you dont have to say it when you're just saying the name in general or speaking of someone else who just happens to be named that.

There are 7+ branches of Islam. The largest of course are the Shiites and Sunnis. Each considers the other the Devil. So they do a terrific job of killing each other in the name of Allah.
