Run something with a lighter desktop environment? This list (as cheesy as the page and ads look) is actually pretty good. It should give you some ideas about where to start looking for a lightweight distro.

It's just a rough list, but it should give an idea of where to start searching if you are trying to run things on older hardware. Distrowatch is also a great site for getting a rundown of what programs, versions, packaging systems, desktop environments, hardware requirements, etc. are used or needed by each distro.

Also, XP is probably a workable option as well. Ks has had a lot of success in the past with getting a trimmed down XP to run with a low memory footprint on older hardware, and I'm sure he could point you in the right direction there.

Ah, no I don't mess with custom builds not put together myself. In my experience 99.9% of them are fucked, maybe a few exceptions, I reckon it depends on the source. I can't think of anything people do to those builds you can't do yourself and you end up learning and knowing what's going on. I would not install linux until you get Windows sorted out, then work on dual-booting.

Use UNetbootin for dual-booting linux after you get windows sorted.

The full sp3 is too bloated for my computer to run. Performance edition is working fine, and its been updated to sp3 just mainly kept the majority of the bloatware out. I just want to try a Linux distro because i want to start learning.
