I agree on no more pets, obviously doesn't fit the lifestyle going on there. But 'adopted puppy?' That's just a bad choice to start with unless you're serious about working with an animal nobody wants. My last 3 dogs were rejects and they all had personality problems we had to really work with.

I got a puppy from the pound, she was a mutt, but she ended up being the best dog I ever had. She was very protective and loyal, and died after 13 years.

I think it's no-kill shelters where I'm at, so yes, it's DIY if you get a loser that can't be fixed (or it'll sit in a concrete cage for the next 10 years).
