People do that here too. Padding your resume is technically lying, and people lie on dating sites constantly

It it different. I am telling you. In the US, for example, you can point to a contract and both parties basically have to abide by what is written. In the East, it's not the same. Your relationships with people are far more important than written law or written agreements.
