Similar issues in the US with immigration, lawmakers aren't being honest or looking out for the welfare or the current residents (the ones that have to live here and pay the taxes from this fallout). Our standard of living is eroding bit by bit (if you're not in the top 20% bracket) - it's not that we actively hate other cultures or don't want new folks in town, but we're the ones that feel the housing crunch and standard of living drop in the neighborhood when the floodgates are opened. Also many other countries are way closer and don't involve planes or boats to get there... so we should probably jump on countries next door to shitholes for not being nicer rather than expect the UK (and US) to clean up the world's mess.
