There is something neat about being able to read and write a different language, because it feels like new areas of the internet open up to you. Especially on YouTube. I can read and write Spanish with the aid of a dictionary and spell checker while only using translators as a final check. I have some knowledge of Japanese words, but that language is fucking hard to remember all of the words. I still have problems speaking and hearing Spanish too and that is arguably the easiest language of the two.

You can get to kindergarten level pretty quickly by knocking out your hiragana and katakana - picking up some words and phrases along the way. Kanji's a little tougher but it depends on how far you want to take this. I got over my... what did they call it... yellow fever or whatever and penchant for anime and bailed pretty quickly myself.

I know my Hiragana. I may have to brush up on Katakana though, but isn't that the same thing except used for foreign words? I know it has a vowel extender so you don't have to double up on the vowel. I would just like to understand it enough to read advanced books and write it without having to keep a dictionary or Jisho handy.

Talk to Dave. He lives there and speaks the language very well. Maybe he will teach you via zoom or something. If you want I can get you his phone number.
