This show really was one of those series that is the epitome of great science fiction. Nerds everywhere and still to this day argue over which franchise I better between Star Wars and Star Trek. However, the answer should be obvious, and that’s Battlestar Galactica (2004). This series is a re-imagining of the original 1978 series, but where as the original would’ve had the cheesy nature that came from the ‘70s and the blatantly obvious Mormon propaganda. The 2004 series made things more vibrant and intriguing. Often times combining two aspects of both the aforementioned franchises by having the intense dogfights of Star Wars mixed with th philosophical and political nature of Star Tesk.
The story begins on the plant Caprica, one of the twelve colonies, and follows the everyday lives of the show’s most prominent characters. The first few episodes end when an old enemy, the Cylons, return to finish their war with the humans, their creators, by destroying the twelve settlements. Causing a few of the humans to flee into space. Now they’re on the run in the universe trying to evade a Cylon fleet who wants them dead. These are the last few humans to survive.
Along the way they learn about a new kind of cylon that could be hidden within their populace and looks exactly like them and aside from that they also learn about a thirteenth colony called Earth. After much debate and deliberation, they decide to chart a course toward where Earth maybe using knowledge passed down through fairytales.
I think this show is still one to consider almost twenty-years later. The production values shouldn’t cause anyone to turn away as it was state-of-the-art for its time and still looks pretty state-of-the-art now. Battlestar Galactica (2004) is fun and intense at the same time and definitely no nonsense. I highly recommend checking out this classic series. It should be available on Amazon Prime with a subscription.
