It makes sense given that one is a direct line and the other relies on waves in the air. But is it really true? It seems like my phone charges faster using a lightning cable than through a third party wireless charger. Can someone with an iPhone weigh in on this please?

Sure, depends on spec. Original Qi is limited to the 7.5 watts, Qi2 and MagSafe 15 watts, and wall charger can do 20 watts (so probably the fastest charge as you have experienced).

The waves are Magnetic and are less efficient than a direct connect. Will ALWAYS take more time than a direct connect cable. On the plus side there is interaction between the phone and the charger, so that the battery is always optimally charged.

you know, they can wirelessly charge people
